Born in France, Schweckler moved to Locust Valley, New York in the 1920s. He traveled extensively around Europe and the Americas painting landscapes, seascapes and cityscapes. This work, completed towards the end of his life, is extremely uncharacteristic of his oeuvre— a subterranean bacchanal of gambling, booze, rats, skeletons. An expressionist Boschian meditation on sin and damnation.
