John Thorne is an American food writer known for his eccentric, poetic pieces on food history and recipes. Very much a proto-Bourdain. This piece "Aglio, Oglio, Basilico: An Essay on the Compounding of Pesto and Diverse Other Summer Garden Meals" is a pamphlet in his series on various simple but historically rich food topics: others include a history of the English muffin, Boston baked beans, the art of pizza. Much ahead of the curve as American food culture had not matured much at this time in the early 80s.
